Chapter Nine:

Peter scrolled through new photos and stumbled upon an image of a young-looking female with a Post-it labeled, “Suicide? Who is she?” He thought for a moment and again did not recall ever hearing a story like this while growing up. What’s your story young lady?

December 16, 1975. A petite, curly brown-haired woman, slender in size, approached the front counter. She wore a long light blue skirt and a long sleeve floral print shirt that covered previous suicide attempts on her wrists. She registered as Alison Lowell, aged 23. Staff provided her room key #327, located on the twelfth floor. Ms. Lowell took the elevator and contemplated life. Do I do it? Yes or No? She decided no when she made it to her room. She switched into pajamas and quickly fell asleep. For the next few days, she tossed and turned contemplating the thought of suicide.

Ms. Lowell spent most of her time walking around the interior of the hotel. She’d bump into people and try to strike up a conversation, but no one engaged. Even within the Cecil, filled with all sorts of curious people floating around, Alison still got ignored. Hoping to find social interaction, she struck out to the streets. What is wrong with me? Why won’t anyone speak to me?

The reception she received on the streets did not impress her. Being socially awkward is such a bitter pill to swallow. One is desperate to fit in, feel connected to the world, but no matter how hard one tries, being accepted by others escapes them. Alison could be described as mildly attractive, had good hygiene, and spoke kindly to others, but everyone literally looked right over or through her. If a transient briefly spoke to her, they belittled her or asked for a handout. She retreated to the hotel even more depressed than when she arrived. God, what is wrong with me?

On December 20, 1975, Ms. Lowell stood overlooking the view from her window feeling great depression and that her life did not matter. Yes? No? Yes? Ok… It’s time .

After convincing herself she would not cheat death again, Ms. Lowell pushed herself out the window and fell to the second floor of the Cecil, which jutted out away from the main portion of the building. She died instantly, and her body parts scattered everywhere making her unrecognizable.

Police responded, but it would be Los Angeles Coroner Daniel Machian who processed the scene. The victim wore a blue and purple sweater, navy-blue pants, a navy-blue coat, black shoes, and a beige bra. Her remains were mostly unidentifiable and the cause of death would be ruled blunt force trauma from the fall and impact. A search of her room revealed no way to positively identify the victim. Coroner Machian guessed her age to be between 20-30 years old. A small black purse and yellow-metal Cecil Hotel room key were in the room. A Greyhound bus ticket from Bakersfield, CA from December 15, 1975 would be in the victim’s purse on top of the dresser.
